When you need a wetsuit
A wetsuit works by holding a thin film of water that the body warms, and that is why the size matters more than the thickness: a loose wetsuit lets cold water in and out constantly and does not keep you warm, however thick it is. The thickness is chosen instead on the time of year and the activity, because someone staying still taking photos underwater gets far colder than someone paddling. In Sardegna you mainly need one in spring and autumn, when the water is still cold but the days invite you out. How do I choose my size?
It has to be close fitting everywhere, with no pockets of air on the back or at the crotch, but without stopping you breathing. A wetsuit that feels comfortable in the shop is almost always too big in the water. Message us with your height and weight and we will get a couple of options ready to try on at collection, because trying it on is the part that counts.
What thickness do I need?
It depends on the time of year and on how much you move: someone who stays still watching the seabed gets cold long before someone who is paddling. In Sardegna the same person needs different thicknesses in April and in August. Tell us the month and the activity and we will give you a sensible pointer.
Do I need the hood too?
A big share of body heat is lost through the head, so in cold water or on long outings a hood and boots make a real difference to how you feel. If you are planning repeated dives on the same day they are worth more than an extra millimetre of wetsuit.
How do you put it on without damaging it?
Slowly and without pulling on the seams: you work it up a bit at a time, rolling it, and better with open hands than with your nails. Tears almost always happen when you rush to get it on. At collection we explain the method, which saves you time as well.
