How much material can I take off?
A little at a time is the rule: repeated thin passes give a controlled result, one deep pass tears the wood and leaves steps. If you have a lot to take off it is still faster to do several light passes than one aggressive one.
How do I avoid getting it wrong on the door?
Mark with a pencil where it actually rubs, with the door still in place, before you take it off. The contact point is almost always smaller than it looks, and taking material off all the way round the edge creates a gap you cannot then recover.
Is it all right on painted wood?
Paint gums up and burns the blade, and on old wood there can be anything underneath. Better to sand the area you are going to plane first. If the piece is reclaimed, check for nails and staples too, which ruin the blade in an instant.
Does it make a lot of dust?
It produces shavings rather than dust, so the mess is easier to collect than with a sander, but it flies about a lot. If you are working indoors it is still worth connecting a vacuum or working somewhere the shavings are easy to sweep up.
