Can I vacuum ash that is still hot?
No, and this is the rule that matters most: the appliance tolerates warm residues, not embers. A live ember can set light to the material inside the container. The safe practice is to wait until the firebox is cold, typically the day after the last use, and to check by hand before you start.
Is it also suitable for building dust?
The filter is designed for ash, so it copes well with fine particles, but demolition dust has a different volume and abrasiveness and clogs it quickly. How often does the filter need cleaning?

The usable capacity is always less than the nominal one, because ash compresses very little and it is better not to fill it to the brim so as not to load the filter.
